Introducing our new charity support.
Charity doesn’t have to begin at home. We know that many of our customers support numerous worthwhile charities. Many take in strays, and others, who can’t, choose to donate or volunteer. Although we support several UK charities as a small independent business, we also see the injustice done to animals abroad. Any animal lover will be well aware of the plight of animals in war zones like Afghanistan and now Ukraine, the inhumane treatment of cats and dogs in the meat trade and the general plight of dogs on the streets worldwide.
In this blog, we have chosen to focus on one particular charity working hard to support the rehoming of the mistreated Galgo’s of Spain.
What is Project Galgo?
Project Galgo has a fundamental objective to urgently raise awareness in the UK of the plight of the Galgos & Podencos of Spain. I was recently approached by Helena Jackson, the founder and Director of Project Galgo, for support with their forthcoming auction. I asked for more information, and this is what she wrote back to me:-
”We are a UK based, volunteer-led, not-for-profit registered charity organisation dedicated to relieving and preventing the suffering predominantly, though not exclusively, of Galgos and Podencos (Spanish sighthounds) and Salukis. They need care and protection, particularly by rescue, rehabilitation, and re-homing.
Galgos, Podencos and Salukis are used for hunting and breeding the best hunters. They are bred for that purpose only. Once revered and held in such admiration, they are now among the most persecuted animals, treated as the lowest of the low abominations. They suffer the most horrifying and barbaric fates, and the death toll every year in Spain of Galgos and Podencos is in the hundreds of thousands. There is currently no law against it, and the exploitation and suffering will continue until there is. Galgos and Podencos are seen as tools, nothing more. If the ‘tools’ are not useful, they are disposed of by various methods. The tradition of hunting is very macho, and if a dog is seen to hunt poorly, its owner ‘Galguero’ is ridiculed, and the way they ‘redeem’ themselves is by bringing the utmost shame on the dog.
Many that are saved are severely traumatised and require very special care, but when they begin to rebuild their trust and lives, it is truly the most rewarding experience to be a part of their healing. Salukis in Bahrain are treated similarly – they are despised among locals and will often be deliberately run over, beaten for fun, mocked and shot at, poisoned or worse.
Project Galgo is honoured to be working with Galgos en Familia, Fundacion Benjamin Menhert and Rays of Hope – For Dogs in Bahrain (we are the only UK Partners for FBM and ROH). All our dogs are placed in loving foster homes, where they are given time to decompress after their journey, support to adjust and adapt to home life and be assessed in various situations/environments. We offer a very conscientious adoption process and endeavour to ensure that our dogs find the best homes, where they are cherished, respected and loved beyond measure for the rest of their days. This special project is dedicated to all those precious souls who have not only lost their lives to such merciless suffering but those who have survived and will go on to survive and find the lives they have always deserved”.

Project Galgo Spring Auction 2022.
For Galgos, February is the darkest month as this is the end of the hunting season in Spain. A time when many Galgo’s are abandoned to a life on the street, or worse, shot or left hung to die. Their hunters, or Galgueros, brutally kill thousands and thousands of Galgos and Podencos to avoid paying for their upkeep out of season. If you can bear it, please visit Project Galgo on YouTube to watch the International release of the Project Galgo Awareness video.
Unfortunately, Project Galgo has been unable to secure the Funds required (£700.00 per hound) to relocate and rehome any Galgo’s or Podenco’s in February. To make March a brighter month, please read on.
To raise awareness and desperately needed funds, Project Galgo is staging a Facebook Auction, which runs from 13thto 20th March. Doggy Boho has donated three lots, with each including a choice of collar, lead and matching bandana. There are many other lovely things to bid on in the auction for those who do not have a dog. Please take a look (Project Galgo FB) and PLEASE give generously.
